Awareness – Sexting & Your Teen!

I know that none of us want to think about the findings in this study.  We want to deny their existence.  Not in my home.  Not my teen.  If our teenager owns a smart phone, has access to a tablet or device (including an iPod touch) or are online at all – we must be aware.

The New Threat – Sexting.  Victimization is happening.  Honest and careful conversations are imperative.  Not blaming or shaming – rather dialogue filled with hope and care and empathy and understanding.

A reality – adolescents who are “cognitively very mature but who are making very bad decisions… psychosocial maturity hasn’t really started to pick up yet.”

4 Rituals found in Neuroscience that are Good for You

  • Ask “What am I grateful for?” No answers? Doesn’t matter. Just searching helps.
  • Label those negative emotions. Give it a name and your brain isn’t so bothered by it.
  • Decide. Go for “good enough” instead of “best decision ever made on Earth.”
  • Hugs, hugs, hugs. Don’t text — touch.

Discussion from Dr Gilbert:

These are powerful!  Living with a heart towards GRATITUDE is life changing – spiritually, in your physical health, and relationally.

Labeling your negative emotions helps us move on. We often forget the power of this step.

Aim for movement versus perfection changes our brains wiring.

And touch has a powerful effect from the right people.  Find safe people.  Be with and be lose to those that build you up and encourage you.

These are powerful steps in the right direction.

I would not say that happiness is the best goal.  Aiming for joy despite the circumstances and being thankful (gratitude) are powerful steps forward.  I cannot emphasize enough the power of touch.  Be close and be smart.  Be near safe people.  Find comfort in and with others. Put down the phone, tablet, computer, screen, device, earbuds, etc.  BE WITH OTHERS.  This is transforming.
